Nat Turner, born into slavery October 2, 1800, on a Southampton County plantation, became a preacher who stated in his confession he’d been chosen by God to lead slaves from bondage. On August 21, 1831, he led a freedom movement that resulted in the participation of nearly 100 slaves and free blacks throughout the state. This crusade concluded with the ultimate punishment of nearly 60 slave owners, their wives and children. He eluded capture for nearly six weeks was eventually imprisoned and later hanged. The incident frightened the slave owners so much that in a desperate attempt to hold on to their unjust power they enacted harsher laws against slaves and free black that exhilarated the emancipation movement.
Born October 2, 1800 in Southampton County, Virginia. Nat is born on the Virginia plantation of Benjamin Turner. At the age of 3 Nat is witnessed by his parents prophesying about past events. Completely amazed they realize that their son was born for a higher purpose. In addition to being a young prophet Benjamin Turner and the entire neighborhood is astonished and shocked to learn of Nat’s mysterious reading and writing comprehension at age 5. At age 10, Nat’s father escapes slavery vowing to return for his wife and child. By age 12 Nat encounters a gang of 4 white youth who pummels him helplessly with snowballs. A few weeks later Nat runs into that same gang. This time he revenges the defeat by pelting his attackers with rocks. As a teenager Nat leaves the plantation without permission. An overseer immediately whips him upon his return. Nat sets a trap for the overseer, which results in a horse accident. The overseer legs are crushed. He is unable to return to work.
Nat becomes fed up with being enslaved. He runs away. After being free for 30 days, Nat receives a vision from God telling him to return to his earthly master. Nat also see images of the future civil war to come. Nat is assured by the Holy Spirit that his special purpose would help to bring about change. Still thinking about himself Nat argues with the spirit. The spirit chastises Nat. Nat decides to return.
After Nat returns some slave dislikes him. Others think he is nuts for returning. On his return, a young beautiful slave girl named Cherry questions Nat. God rewards Nat for his loyalty and he marries Cherry. Cherry is a strong black woman who loves Nat and stands behind everything he does. It is Cherry who Nat shares his innermost thoughts and visions with. They have one child, Charlotte whom Nat loves very much. He does his best to be a good father.
Because he returned on his own, Nat is allowed to travel as much as he wants without a pass. In addition he is allowed to preach at different plantations. He is a fiery preacher and leader in his Southampton County neighborhood. His reputation expands and Nat is one of the most sought after black preachers in the south. Nat’s slave owners trust him very much. Nat’s first signal is an eclipse of the Sun in 1831. It is revealed to Nat that he would lead an emancipation movement among his people. It is at this time that he realizes he must rise up and stand for his people. The emancipation movement begins officially on August 21, 1831, when he and six other former slaves, now freedom fighters punish the Travis family killing all five inhabitants, managing to secure arms and horses. This is when it all hits the fan. Nat and the freedom fighters travel from plantation to plantation punishing the wicked slave owners and their families with death through various means. They encounter many obstacles. They meet many interesting characters both slaves and non-slaves. In the end 55 slave owners and their families are eliminated. Over 200 innocent black are killed by barbaric revengeful mobs. It takes the United States Calvary, hundreds of militia and a force of nearly three thousand soldiers to stop this small group of determined revolutionaries.

As I read the story of Nat Turner I kept thinking back to my school days. We were taught about slavery, or should I say we were taught that there was such a thing as slavery. We learned that American colonists went to Africa and forced men and women onto boats where they were brought to the United States and sold as slaves to work on plantations. As children we learned that slavery was wrong and that slave traders were bad. I think we even learned that slaves were whipped and beaten. Some slave owners were even portrayed as "kind." We all want to think of founding father Thomas Jefferson as a kind slave owner. But if he was really that kind, he would have set his slaves free and he would not have used slave girls for sex.But I never learned the story of Nat Turner in school. I don't remember mention of him. Although our public school teaching about slavery was something that all children will remember, there was nothing in the schooling that could reach into your heart and tear at your soul. It was never a life changing experience. It was never personal.
Prophet - The Story of Nat Turner is personal. We see slavery from the inside. We see and feel the shameful history of the white colonists who cared only about running a farm with free labor; well that plus the endless supply of beautiful young women they could rape. It tells the whole story. We get to see the slave traders and slave owners for what they really were: barbaric, inhuman savages. And we get to see the Africans who were kidnapped and sold into slavery for what they really were: a people so innocent that they could not even comprehend the real reason the savages were stealing them. The godly people of Africa knew nothing about the lust for money. The only reason they could think of as to why they were being taken was that they thought the savages were going to eat them.
"NKECHI
But why are we here? Why are they
doing this?
MCHUMBA
I believe they are white cannibals. They
want to boil us, cook us and then eat us.
Why else would they be doing this?"
Prophet - The Story of Nat Turner is more than a strong book about slavery that should be required reading in every school in America. It is also a moving story with real characters who come to life. We feel the physical and mental pain as children are ripped out of their mother's arms and sold to the highest bidder on the slave block. We feel the horror of a grown man who tries to fall asleep a few yards away from where is wife is being raped by a slave owner/savage.
It is a story about love and heartache and it is a story about a people desperately needing someone to believe in. Main character Nat Turner is that person. He is more than just intelligent. He has many surprising gifts. His sermons are amazing. He is a prophet. Even white people come to hear him preach. Nat develops a following. People come from far away to hear him preach. But a leader like Nat Turner only comes along once in a century and the forces of evil will always be there to take down someone like Nat Turner.
Prophet - The Story of Nat Turner is a work of historical fiction presented as a screenplay. I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful page turner and highly recommend it. I would give it more than five stars if I could.

I experienced so many emotions reading this screenplay....anger, sadness, defeated, exhausted, happiness, rejoiced, etc.. But thanks be to Him Jesus Christ because God is real. I thank Him for the history of my ancestors, for I am a descendant of those who faught for justice and equality. I will continue to fight and carry out their legacy. Thank you to authors and writers who bring history to life so that what has happened will never be forgotten...Peace&Blessing
The Prophet The Story of Nat Turner was an inspiring and motivational screenplay. I have never read a screenplay before, so the format was a little weird in the beginning. But as soon as I got the hang of understanding it, I lost myself in the imagery the story created. This is a story I believe EVERYONE should read at least once.
This is the screenplay for an important piece of history. It is not for the week hearted, it has many graphic scenes we would like to forget ever happened; but we need a reminder - every once in a while - that humanity's inhumanity to each other is too easy to justify in our own minds. Fortunately Jesus died so we wouldn't have to spend eternity enslaved by cruel natures. Meanwhile we have accounts like this to remind us of what we ought to guard against in our own natures.
I'm not fun of historical books as I'm myself a writer of fantasy stories, but sometimes I give a try to other genres.
The Story of Nat Turner by Kenya Cagle was a book that grabbed me at once. It's too difficult to pick up a book from a genre you're not involved in, but this historical story was something I'm glad I've read.
The story uncovers his whole life of prophet Nat. The reader gets into the story and travels with the characters almost feeling what they feel which means that the author has done a good job, he has a good style of writing.
I look forward to reading Kenya Cagle's other books.
This inspirational screen play does a great job conveying the horrific life of a slave during perhaps the darkest period of American history. Along with covering the terrible events Nat Turner and his family faced during his early life, it tells a tale of divine visions leading to driven purpose and the rise of a leader in the emancipation movement. The script tugs at your heart strings and takes you for an emotional ride that will leave you enlightened. When does the movie come out?
I used Nat Turner story in a book that I have just finished. I did not research his story fully and concentrated only on his rebellion, through the eyes of a slave owner. Now that I have had the opportunity to read this wonderful screenplay, I realise that everyone has to judge the events of the Nat Turner rebellion for themselves and with their own conscience.
Nat Turner was many things but he was not evil. Did he kill, yes. Did he murder innocent people, yes, but how many innocent Africans and black people from the Indies endured the inhumane life of a slave without hope or dignity?
Nat Turner may be a rebel, a killer, to some but he was also a man who had a vision and not a selfish one, but one that would set slaves free of shackles, the whip, and the soul crushing hopelessness, which was their lives...Now this has to be made into a movie, in order for more people to realise that not only did slavery exist then but that it still exists today in Nat Turner's Africa.
